Storm Éowyn (januari 2025) wordt gezien als een extreem zware storm, vergelijkbaar met of zelfs erger dan historische stormen zoals Ophelia (2017) wat betreft impact en windkracht in de getroffen gebieden. BBC +1
Keith Leonard said the storm would result in very difficult conditions for everybody and cause serious disruption to transport and significant power outages. He said it was likely that the number of people who would lose power will top the 385,000 figure from Storm Ophelia in 2017.
Storm name
On 21 January 2025, the UK Met Office and associated organisations in Europe used the name "Éowyn" for the fifth storm of the 2024–2025 season. Éowyn is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings and the name was taken from a list based on suggestions by the public.
Both Storms Eunice and Eowyn produced strong gusts, but Storm Eunice's strongest gusts were in southern parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland, while Storm Eowyn primarily affected northern parts of the UK and Ireland.
Storm Eowyn is caused by a band of strong winds at the top of the atmosphere called the jetstream. The stream blows from west to east, directing storms across the Atlantic to the UK. Despite having sustained wind speeds of over 73mph – classed as 'hurricane-force winds' – it is not a hurricane.
Storm Éowyn was one of the most powerful and widespread wind events to hit Ireland since the so-called "night of the big wind" in 1839. The clean-up and recovery will take a long time.
A jet stream is often found relatively close by in the atmosphere, as is the case with Storm Éowyn. The strongest extratropical cyclones tend to occur in the winter months when the jet stream is at its strongest. Hurricanes, however, are tropical storms that form over the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific.
The JTWC's unofficial estimate of one-minute sustained winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) would, by that measure, make Haiyan the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike land.
Éowyn's heavy rainfall as it tracks towards the UK is a result of another key ingredient for explosive storm development: deep clouds within the storm that generate energy when their water condenses.
The name Eowyn has its origins in the English language, specifically in the realms of literature and mythology. Derived from Old English, it translates to Horse of Joy.
The Bhola Cyclone of 1970 collided with north-east India and what was then East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). It brought with it a devastating storm surge of 35ft (10.5m). In total, as many as 500,000 people are thought to have been killed by cyclone.
'Generational' bomb cyclone Eowyn slams UK, breaks wind record in Ireland. The storm set a new wind record in Ireland and cut power to over 700,000 buildings. The United Kingdom and Ireland were both blasted by hurricane-force winds of as high as 114 mph from Storm Éowyn on Jan. 24.
Éowyn strongest storm in living memory
"Many people remember Ophelia. It actually surpasses the wind strengths for Ophelia, and Darwin it's on a par.
Hurricane Ophelia, known as Storm Ophelia while extratropical, was regarded as the worst storm to affect Ireland in 50 years, and was also the easternmost Atlantic major hurricane on record.
Ezekiel 13:11-13
'” Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will cause a stormy wind to break forth in My fury; and there shall be a flooding rain in My anger, and great hailstones in fury to consume it.
What is the deadliest storm in history? The Bhola cyclone of 1970, which caused 300,000–500,000 deaths in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), is considered the deadliest storm in history.
The Burns Day storm of 1990 is the most expensive weather event in the UK, costing insurers £3.37 billion compared to the £2 billion in damages caused by the Great Storm of 1987. The Burns Day Storm also had a higher fatality rate, 47 in the UK, 17 in the Netherlands and 12 in France.
Satellite Era Observations (1980-2021)
Five of those storms exceeded our hypothetical category 6 [>192 mph] and all of these occurred in the last 9 years of the record."
Top wind speeds are over 50km/h faster than what was recorded during Storm Ophelia in 2017 and 10km/h faster than what was recorded during Storm Debbie in 1961 – both of which caused significant damage to structures around the country.
Lightning can travel through plumbing. It is best to avoid all water during a thunderstorm. Do not shower, bathe, wash dishes, or wash your hands. The risk of lightning travelling through plumbing might be less with plastic pipes than with metal pipes.
The Met Office has named the first storm of the season as winds up to 80mph are set to batter Scotland. Storm Eowyn is the fifth named storm of the season and comes with a name JRR Tolkien fans may be familiar with.

At its peak in 1974, the Brisbane River reached a level of 5.45 metres. It was lower than the 8.35m recorded in the 1893 floods but higher than the 4.46m recorded in the 2011 floods and 3.85m recorded in 2022.
