Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted in the Netherlands. Do you want to apply for a Dutch credit card? At ABN AMRO you can apply for a Credit Card, a Gold Card or the Student Card. These credit cards are all Mastercards and worldwide accepted.
ABN AMRO is a personal bank in the digital age.
Types of Visa cards include credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards, and gift cards.
All about your debit card
Your ABN AMRO debit card shows the Maestro logo. Maestro is a Mastercard payment brand. Your Maestro debit card allows you to make payments and withdraw cash securely, anywhere in the Netherlands and in most places throughout the world.
Your Visa Debit card still works like a debit card, not a credit card. If you use your PIN for your Visa Debit card transactions without signing, you may not receive the same security protections for transactions not processed by Visa.
The first digit indicates the provider: Mastercard numbers start with a 2 or 5. Visa card numbers start with a 4.
Can You Use Your Debit Card as a Credit Card? The answer is yes and no. You can choose “credit” rather than “debit” at the register in many cases, but that doesn't mean your debit card actually acts as a credit card. To better understand the answer, let's look at the differences between these types of cards.
At ABN AMRO you can apply for a Credit Card, a Gold Card or the Student Card. These credit cards are all Mastercards and worldwide accepted.
Enable card payments outside of Europe
If you are travelling outside Europe, you will need to set your payment profile to 'World' using the ABN AMRO app or Internet Banking. This will enable you to make payments and withdraw cash wherever you are in the world.
RFS formally acquired ABN AMRO on 17 October 2007. Fortis would receive ABN AMRO's Dutch and Belgian operations, Banco Santander would get Banco Real in Brazil, and Banca Antonveneta in Italy and RBS would get ABN AMRO's wholesale division and all other operations, including those in Asia.
You can find out whether your credit card uses the Visa network by checking for its symbol on your card. Banks and building societies including HSBC, Barclaycard and Nationwide use Visa to process payments. Visa is also used as a payment network for debit and prepaid cards, too.
However, unlike American Express and Discover, Visa does not issue credit cards. It is solely a payment network. Instead, financial institutions, such as Chase, Capital One and Wells Fargo, issue credit cards — and Visa serves as the communication line that allows payment transactions to be processed.
Although Mastercard and Visa cards are accepted almost everywhere in the globe, Visa cards have a few more advantages. Even with a Visa card at the most basic level, you can access advantages like stolen or lost card reporting, urgent card replacement, emergency cash disbursement, roadside dispatch, and zero liability.

The basic difference between Credit Card and Debit Card
Debit Cards are directly linked to your bank account (such as a Salary, Savings or Current Accounts). When you use your Debit Card, the amount is deducted directly from your bank account. Credit Cards give you the benefit of buying now, paying later.
Running a debit card as “credit” is not the same thing as using a credit card. Your debit card is attached to your checking account. A credit card is a line of credit, meaning that TwinStar is actually lending you the money for the purchase and billing you for it later.
The vendor will process the payment as credit, meaning you won't need to input your personal identification number (PIN) but may be required to sign for the transaction, as you would with a credit card. The vendor passes the payment request through the credit card processing network, as with credit card purchases.
Debit and credit cards both allow cardholders to obtain cash and make purchases. Debit cards are linked to the user's bank account and are limited by how much money is in the account. Credit cards provide you with a line of credit they can borrow against as needed and pay back later.
